9. YOU ARE SO PREDICTABLE
The big question is... are you boring? You probably are, so let's see what you can do about it!
Just because you have always used oil paint, does not mean you always have to use oil paint, or pastels or fix motor bikes, or whatever it is that allows you to express your creativity.
Don’t be afraid to try something different. Change your medium, change your style, change your subject… change your mind.
Just because you always drive the same route to work every day, doesn't mean you can’t vary it. Just because year after year, you always have the same opinions about politics and religion and television etc. does not mean that you are right.
Sometimes you need to try an alternative point of view just to get a proper reference on what you already have.
Recently my daily pattern of painting very, very early in the morning was disrupted while we were in the very slow process of moving 200 km. up the coast, it took weeks.
I still woke up every morning at 2.30 am because it is a habit that I have had for more than 10 years, but suddenly I couldn't paint - my easel was 200 km. away. My paints were everywhere. My brushes were somewhere else! I was at a loss. I realised just how important in my life that early morning quiet time was.
It is good to have a shakeup every now and then and to be forced to review your situation. Get out of your routine and experiment with different styles, ideas and mediums. You don’t have to be predictable, that is very similar to being boring.
Well I hope you are convinced that you are not boring... but just in case you are, I hope you intend to do something about it! (Just for your friends sake!)
